KOCHVILLE TWP, MI— The Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum at Saginaw Valley State University will host art camps for children and adults this summer.

Launching with a session for 8- to 10-year-olds, the camp kicks off one of its first weekly segments with events from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, June 26, through Thursday, June 30.

According to Museum Curator of Education Andrea Ondish, the kids will be working on live painting and art deco lanterns, among other projects, while older groups will be working with embossed metal, drawing with thread, and punched-loop tapestry.

Sessions for older age groups are as follows:

Ondish said current SVSU Art major Kari Brown would instruct the camps as a way to help them build a love for art and to see what career pathways it can create.

"For her and all the art teachers since we started the camp in 08, it's for sure a line on the resume," Ondish said. "For a lot of kids, this is hands-on. It makes an impact. They’re not going to sit at a desk and have someone yap at them. They’re getting their minds involved. You never know where it’ll lead them to go."

Registration for the art camp is $165 for all four days, payable online or by mailed check. Museum members can also receive a 10% discount.

According to the museum website, the summer camp program, now in its 15th year, sells itself because participants often want to come back year after year.

In addition to the youth summer art camp, the museum will host an adult art camp from Aug. 14 through 18.

Those five one-day camp sessions will be limited to 14 participants per event for adults 18 and older.

Registration for the adult camp is $125 for the five days, or $30 per person per day, with art supplies provided.
